The man behind the pages
My name is Brad Strong and 3dcognition.com is a natural evolution of my love of learning, teaching, and everything having to do with design and development. Through teaching, I have become fascinated by theory and its practical application to design, animation, interactivity, and game development.
In 2007 I wrote a book called Creating Game Art for 3D Engines which I mention here because the book was primarily about how to use 3ds Max, with some tips on how to import your game assets into the Torque game engine. Well, then the Unity game engine caught my attention so I created two videos that describe how to import a bones-based character, and a biped-based character into the Unity game engine (from 3ds Max). If you have the book or even if you don't, you can find both of these tutorials here near the bottom of the page.
I currently teach Web and Multimedia courses at Karlstad University in Sweden. This past term, as part of studies in a pedagogy program, I conducted an experiment to test the validity of Game-Based Learning in some of my classes and was, once again, blown away by how games can add enrichment and engagement to the learning process. I have created two types of customizable games (meaning that you, the parent, teacher, or student, can customize your own game contents. One is a traditional drag-and-drop game where the player matches up ten like terms. The other is a multiple-choice game where the player clicks on the best answer for ten questions. Currently these games are only available for testing with teachers and instructors, so if that's you, contact me.
On this site you will also find many pages of discussion on the theoretical underpinnings of digital design and development. Finally, there are over fifty video tutorials on 3ds Max, Flash, Torque, and Unity, as well as several hi-resolution video tutorials absolutely free. I hope you are able to find something here to help you on your own digital journey!
