Save The World is a 3D learning game that allows you to fly over the entire world in just a few minutes. You select a world region - United States, South America, Europe, Africa, Middle East, or Asia. Once you have selected a region, you and your ship are dropped into the region and given a mission. You must drop aid packages over three randomly-selected countries in need. This task is made easier because of a global system that tracks your ship against a map of the world. In level 1, all of the countries are labeled. If you are able to deliver aid to the three countries in need, you go on to level 2. In level 2, the labels are gone, making the task that much more difficult. This game does several things at the same time; first, you get a sense of the geography of the world from a 60,000 foot view - in fact, you can fly at any height you want, then turn the plane down to see what the world looks like from that perspective. The outlines of the continents and the borders of the countries begin to look familiar. The labels are big enough to see from a great distance so you begin to intuitively understand where different countries are in relation to one-another. The 3D nature of this game makes the process of finding and interacting with the different geography more compelling. There is a more physical nature to the process, and the brain is engaged more fully than when one is merely looking at a map. There are over 150 countries represented in this game. It is entirely possible to learn most of them with just a few hours of play time each week. After that, simply playing the game a few hours a year is enough to retain the names and locations of most of the world. The next time you hear some world news about Rwanda, you will know where it is on the African continent. The next time you meet a person from Afganistan or India, you will know where those countries are, and who their neighbors are. One's sense of world understanding can only become broader through this kind of experience. South America have just been added, and the Middle East, Asia, and Africa regions will be added to Save the World sometime in Fall '08.
